Michael Ash Photographer: Alex Frayne
May 13th, 2013
The latest photographic series to stem from Alex Frayne’s ADELAIDE NOIR SERIES, is the Doomsday Set, aka THE DOOMSDAY PREPPERS SERIES.
The collection is a photographic re-imagining of events which preceded January 20, 1976. In the weeks leading up to that day, a Jehovas Witness Soothsayer had predicted an earthquake would trigger a giant tsunami which would engulf Adelaide. This catastrophe would be emblematic of God’s Wrath at the social liberalisation occurring under Dunstan, himself a controversial figure. This was publicised by the media, prompting a not insignificant number of residents to sell their property and leave; some businesses had clearance sales while many who decided to stay indulged in doomsday parties. Dunstan promised to stand on the seashore at Glenelg and wait for the imminent destruction. He did so on 20 January, the day of the predicted storm…
The series examines the human propensity to see ‘endings’ to narratives and the collective fears that seem hardwired into our psyche…the fear of mass extinction. |
